What Gaskets Are and What They Do

If you regularly bring in their vehicle for servicing, you will eventually hear from a technician that some of the gaskets are bad and must be replaced. Chances are, you just nod your head and approved the repair, yet do you have any idea what gaskets are and what they do? Probably not.

Various operating systems in your vehicle use gaskets to keep gases and fluids within a certain area. When these substances begin to leak, your vehicle can end up encountering big problems. Gaskets are seals between two or more surfaces within these systems that help contain different types of liquid or air.

Although gaskets are manufactured to withstand high temperatures and many different conditions, normal wear and tear will eventually break down the gasket, causing the seal to fail. Thus, when you hear that your oil gasket is leaking, for example, it's best to have the part replaced.
