What is a Differential?

December 21st, 2018 by

Your differential is an important part of your tire rotation. The differential is located with the axle of your vehicle, whether in the front for a front-wheel drive or the opposite with a rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive vehicles will have a differential in the front and the back. These are essential for your tires rotating at the correct speeds, as your wheels may rotate at different speeds at certain times.

With a differential, your axles maintain their speed even when you are taking a turn and the inside wheel moves a bit slowly compared to your outside wheel. Some four wheel drive cars will need more differential oil changes due to the use of the differential so often. It’s recommended to have your differentials checked every 30,000 miles.

Your differentials should be checked if you think your car is running roughly. You can get a tire rotation and differential checkup at Straub Honda.
