If your Wheeling Honda key fob doesn’t seem to be working as well as it used to, you’re probably due for a Honda key fob battery replacement. Signs of a weak Honda key battery include needing to be much closer to your car in order to unlock it, and slow starts when using the remote start function. In the guide below, the Straub Honda team walks you through Honda key replacement step-by-step!

How to Change the Battery In a Honda Key Fob

If your key fob is no longer working, a new Honda key battery can get it working again like new — although a complete Honda key replacement may be necessary if it’s not working due to damage. To change the key battery, first check your owner’s manual for the correct Honda key battery replacement. Then follow these steps:

  1. Find the button on the fob that releases the metal emergency key inside. Press the button down and pull the metal emergency key out of the key fob.
  2. Wedge the edge of the key into the slot at the top of the key fob. Twist the key to lever apart the two halves of the fob. A small jeweler’s flathead screwdriver also works well.
  3. Hold the halves together to prevent any parts from falling out, placing your thumb over where the battery is located.
  4. With your other hand, remove the dead battery and insert the replacement.
  5. Line up the two halves of the fob and press back together. You should hear the pieces snap back into place.

How To Reassemble a Honda Key Fob

You may know how to open a Honda key fob, but many people underestimate the importance of knowing how to reassemble. A Honda key fob contains many small internal parts that may fall out if you’re not careful. Here’s how to reassemble your fob after Honda key fob battery replacement:

  1. Use your spare key fob as a reference for how the reassembled fob should look.
  2. Set the fob and the fob faceplate side by side, lining them up just as they would be when reassembled.
  3. Turn the faceplate over and fit the buttons through the correct openings in the faceplate.
  4. Pick up the crossbar and orient it with the curvature facing outward. Insert it between the empty spaces of the top two buttons.
  5. Place the new battery into the motherboard, positive side up.
  6. Insert the motherboard into the key fob with the rubber film facing the buttons.
  7. Line up the key fob halves and press together until the parts snap into place.
  8. You now know how to change the battery in a Honda key fob and reassemble it properly!
